Bridge Services

We have been heavily engaged in the conception, creation and integration of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

The initial stages being delivered as a dispensation from Telegraphy allowing vessels to be fitted with equipment in lieu of a Telegraph Officer. The equipment was in place for the Master to use an automated Telex station (Maritex) and a short-wave set with automatic radio-telephony alarm receivers. All this was based on the international distress frequency 2182kHz and would allow help in the vicinity of the vessel by other vessels.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System

Throughout the 90´s our engineers were heavily engaged in the reformation of the onboard radio equipment, converting vessels from either radiotelegraphy or radiotelephony to GMDSS A1, A2, A3 or A4. This often meant travelling between ports and hopping between vessels. As the vessels were often still in trade this meant that certification was performed as soon as the installations were completed.

……and Now!

The present day GMDSS equipment are now in their 3rd generation and have adapted to the requirements of the nautical personnel as well as the technical innovations of the time. This has meant that the equipment has become more advanced in both operation and development. The basic operation however remains and is still to initiate a distress with a fully automated response.

We, at Marlink, have always represented the markets leading brands and today is no different with our firm commitment and representation of Sailor products (formerly Thrane, SP Radio, Skanti) holding a well defined spares depot and knowledge base of these products.

Shore-Based Maintenance Contracts

Today we are also providing our contract customers with GMDSS contracts and services to combine the requirement of certification. VDR, AIS, EPIRBs, Gyro and other navigational products are some of the branch products which we perform service on and certify, either directly or with our partner companies.

Many of the products we supply are backed-up by our extensive “replacement unit program” which allows the vessel to continue sailing with a refurbished unit as a replacement. The defective/expired units are then given a workshop maintenance period and put back on the shelf to be put in service elsewhere. This meets the regulatory standards as well as rovides an economical alternative. A clear win for the environment!
